Common Job Application Mistakes

12 Oct 2026

Strong candidates often lose opportunities to small, avoidable mistakes. Before you submit, check your application against this list.

Sending a generic résumé A résumé that is not tailored to the role makes the reader work to see your fit. Adjust your summary and leading accomplishments for each application.

Ignoring the instructions Missing a requested cover letter, portfolio, or answer to a screening question can remove you from consideration immediately. Read the posting and the application form carefully.

Applying for roles that are a poor fit Applying widely to jobs that do not match your experience, location, or work authorization uses time you could spend on stronger opportunities.

Listing duties instead of results "Responsible for customer accounts" says little. "Managed 60 customer accounts and improved renewal rates" shows impact. Use specific, honest evidence.

Typos and inconsistencies Spelling errors, mismatched dates, or titles that differ from your LinkedIn profile undermine credibility. Proofread carefully and ask someone else to review.

An unprofessional email or voicemail setup Use a simple, professional email address and make sure your contact details are current.

Not following up If you have not heard back after about one to two weeks, a short, polite follow-up note is appropriate. Keep a record of when you applied so you can follow up on time.

Not keeping records Without a tracker, it is easy to forget which version of your résumé you sent or who you spoke to. Record each application's details and next steps.
